Hartings calls it a career
Center Jeff Hartings has informed the team that his playing days are over.
In an offseason that hasn’t officially begun but has already brought monumental change, this is just another domino that will officially fall.
Hartings took over at center in 2001 following the retirement of Dermonti Dawson, inarguably one of the best centers to have ever played the game. In fact, Pittsburgh — well known as the NFL’s linebacker factory — has often had centers who have been regarded as the best at any given time. Looking back to the glory days of the latter half of the 1970s, it’s been no mystery why the Steelers have featured a strong running game, regardless of the actual ball carrier.
Jeff finishes his career after 11 years, and will be sorely missed. He and Alan Faneca anchored a line that led the best running team, cumulatively, since 2001.
